Design of the 2002 Gold Sovereign


The obverse features a Shield Back, or the Royal Coat of Arms of Great Britain. It is surrounded by a wreath of laurel. The year 2002 is displayed in the lower part of the coin.

The reverse displays the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait was created by Ian Rank Broadley. The inscriptions ” ELIZABETH . II . DEI . GRA REGINA . FID . DEF ” surrounds the profile of her Majesty.

The obverse design was created by Timothy Noad, a herald painter at the College of Arms.

The 2002 Gold Sovereign was created specifically to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of her Majesty Elizabeth II. It represents an eventful year for the Royal Family.

It was only the second time over a century that a new design was introduced in a Gold Sovereign. The previous occasion was in 1989, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the very first gold sovereign. However, 1989 Gold Sovereigns were only issued as Proof sets.

The Shield reverse was last used for Queen Victoria from 1838 to 1887 inclusive. The design was changed in 1887, year of the Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Nevertheless, three different designs were issued in 1887.
