What is the difference between silver and sterling silver?
Pure silver (also called fine silver) is 999 parts per thousand silver. Sterling silver is 925 parts per thousand — an alloy that includes 7.5% other metals for durability. Sterling silver is the most common form found in jewellery and silverware. Both have value and we buy both.
Is all 925 silver hallmarked?
Most sterling silver items carry a hallmark, but not all. Older items, foreign pieces, or items below the hallmarking weight threshold may not be marked. We can test and verify the purity of unhallmarked items at our office.
How do I know if my silverware is real silver?
Look for hallmarks — a lion passant (walking lion) indicates sterling silver. You can also check for stamps reading 925, 800, or EPNS (which means electroplated, not solid silver). If unsure, bring your items to our Hatton Garden office for a free valuation and we will test them for you.
