Design and History of the 1oz Silver Kangaroo


The obverse display the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design was realised by Raphael Maklouf. The Face Value “1 DOLLARS ” (Australian Dollars) is indicated underneath.

The reverse features different pictures of a red kangaroo. For some coins, the australian animal is surrounded by stylised rays of sunlight. The design includes the inscription ” AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO ” and the Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. Next to the year-date is mentioned the coin’s weight and fineness. Depending on the reverse design, it can be the realisation of Horst Hahne or Stuart Devlin.

The Silver Kangaroo series was first introduced in 1993 by the Perth Mint (owned and run by the Commonwealth Government of Australia).
