The Gold Panda has been issued by the People’s Bank of China since 1982 and is the only major bullion coin whose design changes every year, which makes each date a collectable in its own right as well as an investment. Since 2016 the coins have been struck to metric weights, and the 30 gram coin is the flagship of the range.
This is the 2024 issue, supplied in the China Mint’s sealed protective capsule.
Design of the 2024 Gold Panda
The obverse shows the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests at the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, with the inscription “People’s Republic of China” in Chinese characters and the year 2024. The reverse for 2024 depicts an adult panda with its cub seated close by, with the face value of 500 Yuan and the weight and purity, “30g Au .999”.
Specifications
Struck in 30 grams of 999 fine gold (24 carats), the coin measures 32 mm across and carries a legal tender face value of 500 Yuan backed by the People’s Republic of China.
Why buy Gold Pandas?
The Panda is one of the most recognised gold coins in the world and trades close to its gold value while the yearly designs keep past dates in demand. It is exempt from VAT in the United Kingdom as investment gold. As a foreign coin it is not exempt from Capital Gains Tax; UK investors looking for CGT-free gold should consider Britannias or sovereigns.
