The 10 Francs is the smallest of the classic French gold coins, struck at the Paris Mint from the reign of Napoleon III through to the Marianne “Rooster” (Coq) issues of 1899 to 1914. Like its bigger brother, the 20 Francs, it is one of the most traded pre-1933 gold coins in Europe and a low-cost way to hold gold in small units.
You will receive a mixed selection of French 10 Francs gold coins. Types and dates vary based on our stock; every coin is a genuine circulated piece in good collectable condition.
Design of the French 10 Francs gold coin
The best known type is the Marianne Rooster: the head of Marianne, the symbol of the French Republic, on the obverse, and the Gallic rooster on the reverse with the motto “Liberté Égalité Fraternité”. Earlier Napoleon III issues carry the Emperor’s portrait with the imperial eagle or a wreath on the reverse.
Specifications
Each 10 Francs coin is struck in 900 fine gold (21.6 carats) with a gross weight of 3.2258 grams, giving a fine gold content of 2.9032 grams. The coin measures 19 mm across.
Why buy 10 Francs gold coins?
Small historic gold coins let you divide your holding into affordable units that are easy to sell one at a time. The 10 Francs carries a low premium over its gold value, is recognised by dealers across Europe, and is exempt from VAT in the United Kingdom as investment gold. As a foreign coin it is not exempt from Capital Gains Tax; UK investors looking for CGT-free gold should consider gold sovereigns.
