History of the Queen Victoria Jubilee Head Gold Sovereign

As early as 1879, the Queen Victoria discussed her original idea to update the design of her portrait in the circulating gold coins in UK. The queen asked the sculptor Joseph Edgar Boehm to design a new effigy of the Queen, which will be used on future silver and gold coins, including colonial gold. Boehm proceeded at a very slow pace, during several years. He made a large number of changes during the preparation of the new effigy. As the work was continuing to proceed at such a slow pace, the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria - from her accession to the throne in June 1887 - arrived. Hence, the introduction of a new coinage to coincide with the "Golden Jubilee" of Elizabeth II.

The second Queen Victoria Gold Sovereign first appeared in her Jubilee year of 1887. The Victoria Jubilee Head design was produced to celebrate queen Victoria Golden Jubilee, which represents the fiftieth year of Victoria's reign. Above all, this design remained unchanged until 1993.

Other mint marks were available for the gold sovereign Jubilee Head, such as Melbourne and Sydney in Australia.

Although a widespread negative reaction by the public to the Jubilee Head design occurred, it has been regarded by collectors as another noble design in the British / Australian sovereign series.
